The Charleston is considered by some to be the grandfather of Lindy Hop, and modern Lindy Hoppers incorporate elements of this energetic dance with its characteristic kick steps into their dancing. We’ll learn side-by-side Charleston, some basic variations, and add kick steps to our Lindy Hop moves.

Instructor Bios:
Barney Lee
After Barney found the UBC Ballroom Dance Club, dancing has become a major part of his life. Over the years, he has learned many different styles of social dance and has been sharing his knowledge as a teacher for the last two decades. He especially loves bringing the joy of dance to beginner dancers! His life changed again, for the better, when he started Lindy Hop sixteen years ago. Now, as a prominent member of the Lindy Hop scene, he has been building community by creating opportunities for learning and connecting by co-creating the Uptown Swing Collective.
Katie Tang
Dancing since the age of two, Katie trained in ballet, tap, and modern jazz before discovering Lindy Hop in 2015 in Glasgow, Scotland. Though initially unsure about partner dancing, she was instantly drawn to the music and the magic of lead and follow. Katie loves teaching and sharing the joy and connection that swing dancing brings.
Teresa Riley
Teresa Riley, originally from Medicine Hat, Alberta, is a ballroom dance teacher. As a young child Teresa started out in ballet and jazz and did musical theatre. As a young adult, Country swing and two-stepping was the norm in Medicine Hat, and Teresa fell in love with the connection and teamwork of partner dancing. When she moved to Vancouver, she discovered the swing dance world, especially the Lindy Hop, and now that is her specialty. Through learning connection, Teresa is now able to teach in all forms of partner/ballroom dancing including salsa, waltz, bachata, rhumba, foxtrot, jive and Westcoast swing to name a few.
